10 Years Alphabetizing Homeless People - "SONIA'S DREAM" - Class of Tuesday, May 7.

Today, we had the visit of the great Teachers and Educators, Mrs. Sonia Altomar and Beatriz Lipskis.

They work in our school since the very beginning, 10 years ago.

They always dedicated themselves to helping others, to raise human beings out of ignorance and poverty.

Over those 10 years, they have helped to educate thousands of iliterate men in the streets, that were welcomed and lived in the shelter called Arsenal da Esperança, in São Paulo, Brazil.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN: THE DREAM OF SONIA.

I mention, in particular, the work of Mrs. Sonia Altomar, the creator and founder of "Caminho Novo", the School that used to exist inside Arsenal da Esperança, from April 2004 until January 2013.

In 2003, moved by a deep solidarity and the desire to help others, Mrs. Sonia Altomar participated in a task force within the Arsenal, to write letters to the families of the illiterate men.

It was a way for them to have news from their families, who lived far away, in other brazilian states.

And so, Sonia spent hours and hours, afternoons and evenings, writing letters addressed to the families of the received men. Many of these families lived in the North and Northeast of Brazil.

Over time, these personal stories of pain, suffering, difficulties and homesickness were impacting, more and more, the heart and mind of Sonia ...

So, she used to come home at night, and cried, cried and cried ... Of pity and compassion for these people and their lives, filled with so much struggle and suffering ...

Until one day, when her husband, worried, told her:

"Sonia, my dear, these sad stories are hurting you! You need to do something about it, take action! Either you do something to help them, or you stop going there in the joint effort. This sadness is overwhelming your heart. "

And so, the teacher Sonia decided to take action, and founded the School inside Arsenal da Esperança, in April 2004, named "CENTRO SOCIAL CAMINHO NOVO".

Then, she drafted a project, and presented to the Associação Pela Família (ASPF), which took over, and funded the project designed by Sonia.

A team of teachers were hired, and the Alphabetization courses
began, along with: elementary, high school classes, painting, crafts and computing courses were also offered.

Thousands of men were literate.

Many of them were able to get a job, improved their lives and left the shelter.

They were able to resume, and rebuild, their lives.

Others have returned to their homeland.

And others, more drived, attended and graduated from Universities.

ALL OF THIS HAPPENNED because of the dream of a woman,
called Sonia.

Emaho!

All of this happenned because of you.
